I know a lot of conservatives. Some are selfish and greedy, some are not. I know some very liberal folks. Some are selfish and greedy, some are not.
Having set the generalizations aside, then, here is the difference in the compassion of the two that I have observed.
Liberals see inequality and poverty and place the blame on those who are successful specifically and on society as a whole, generally. They believe everyone should sacrifice for the common good and that government must force that sacrifice.
Conservatives see inequality and poverty and place the blame on failed government programs, a poor educational system, on bad choices and, to a lesser degree, society's inequalities. They believe they should sacrifice individually to improve the plight of the poor, but don't believe they have the right to determine what someone else gives or doesn't give. And they believe government programs are inefficient at best and create dependency, at worst.
The conservative giving is borne out in tax records in a dramtic fashion. Liberals seem to give more of their time and energy to causes they believe in.
One believes in compulsory giving and the other in voluntary giving. But both give.
Neither is evil.
